A role model association for the dealer community.
The Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association (TNPDA) was established in 1978 with the objective of providing petroleum dealers with a common platform to collectively address industry concerns and represent their interests before Government authorities, Oil Marketing Companies and other relevant stakeholders.
Over the years, TNPDA has grown from a small collective platform into a strong statewide association with active participation from district-level dealer associations.
One of the clearest indicators of this growth has been the remarkable increase in participation at the Association’s Annual General Meetings. During the 1980s, AGM participation was around 250+ dealers. With the strengthening and active involvement of District Associations under the present team, participation has grown significantly, with 3,500+ dealers attending year after year.
This growth reflects more than numbers. It represents greater unity, stronger communication and increased confidence among the dealer community.
From a Common Platform to a Strong Dealer Network.
TNPDA's journey has been shaped by the changing needs of petroleum dealers and the evolving petroleum retail industry. From its foundation in 1978 to its statewide representation today, the association continues to move forward with the dealer community.
The Beginning
Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association was founded to provide petroleum dealers with a common platform and effective representation.
Building Collective Strength
The association continued to grow while addressing common challenges faced by petroleum dealers and strengthening communication among members.
Strengthening District Associations
District-level associations became increasingly active through road shows, meetings and programmes designed to encourage participation.
Expanding Industry Representation
TNPDA actively represented dealer concerns relating to margins, wages, taxation, labour, safety and other important industry matters.
Education Sponsorship
An education sponsorship initiative was introduced to recognise top-performing children of retail outlet employees studying in Government schools.
Moving Forward Together
TNPDA continues to represent and support petroleum dealers across Tamil Nadu through collective action, awareness and meaningful initiatives.
Fighting for Fair Dealer Margins.
TNPDA worked with the national association CIPD and represented to the Government and Oil Marketing Companies seeking a hike in dealer margin.
Through sustained representation, the association successfully contributed towards securing a decent hike in dealer margins, supporting the economic sustainability of petroleum dealers.
Standing Up for Dealer Interests.
The petroleum retail industry operates within a complex regulatory environment involving wages, taxation, labour, safety and operational requirements.
TNPDA was the first association to obtain a stay in the Madras High Court in connection with the notified wages of Oil Marketing Companies, followed by an appeal before the Supreme Court.
TNPDA subsequently joined as an intervener before the Delhi High Court as directed by the Supreme Court in the notified wages matter. This action provided significant relief to the dealer community.

The strength of a statewide association depends on the strength of its local network.
TNPDA has placed significant emphasis on making District Associations more active, responsive and connected with dealers at the grassroots level.
Through road shows, meetings and programmes, the association has encouraged district-level participation and communication, contributing to the remarkable dealer participation seen at Annual General Meetings.

Since 2020, the association has been running an education sponsorship initiative that recognises top-performing children of retail outlet employees studying in Government schools.

The foundation of TNPDA goes back to 1978, when A.R. Damodaran Mudaliyar established the association with a vision of creating a common platform for petroleum dealers.
The formation of TNPDA created an organised platform through which dealers could come together, discuss common concerns and seek representation before Government authorities and the petroleum industry.
